For the first time in its 20 year history, the critically acclaimed publication, New American Paintings, which presents a juried exhibition-in-print with each issue, will jump from the page to the Museum walls. New American Paintings: The 2014 Midwest Edition features 40 artists selected by Elmhurst Art Museum Chief Curator, Staci Boris.
Boris selected from more than 400 works submitted by artists from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio and Iowa. The resulting exhibition offers a view of the ways in which paint is used as a medium in contemporary art practice.
Among the artists showcased are Elijah Burgher, whose large-scale paintings on canvas drop cloths which incorporate ideas from magick (sic) and the occult were shown in the 2014 Whitney Biennial; Lilli Carré, whose experimental animations and ceramics were the subject of a 2014 solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; and Alex Bradley Cohen, whose paintings of family, friends, sitcoms and historical events have been featured in ‘Bad at Sports’ and ‘Newcity Arts.’
This exhibition made possible by the generous support of Bob and Kim Eck.
