”The Matchmaker” Closes This Weekend at GreenMan Theatre

Elmhurst, IL — GreenMan Theatre’s production of Thornton Wilder’s classic comedy “The Matchmaker” is entering its final weekend. The final performances are Friday May 4 at 7:30 PM, Saturday May 5 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday May 6 at 2 PM. Wilder’s play served as the basis for the famous musical “Hello, Dolly!” His thoughtful farcical elements fly as wealthy shopowner and widower Horace Vandergelder hires Matchmaker Dolly Levi to find him a suitable bride in early 20th century Yonkers, New York. His plans go awry when Dolly decides that she herself would be the perfect match for Horace. Horace has already rejected the suitor for his niece as he and Dolly leave for New York City to call on prospective match Irene Molloy. Horace entrusts his the care of his store to his clerks Cornelius and Barnaby, who decide to seek adventure in New York City rather than mind the shop. They happen upon the hat store run by Irene and have to hide inside as they spot Horace nearby. The humor picks up even more when Horace and Dolly end up in the same restaurant as Cornelius, Barnaby, Irene, and her young assistant, Minnie. Add the appearance of Horace’s niece and the man who hopes to marry her against Horace’s wishes, and you have the makings for plenty of hilarity. When all the laughs settle, find out if Dolly will be able to make any matches whatsoever.
