ELMHURST, Ill., September 5, 2003 – A total of 924 Elmhurst businesses combined to generate nearly $14.73 million in state, county and local sales tax receipts during the First Quarter of 2003 (January 1 through March 31), according to a Report of Sales Tax Receipts issued by the Illinois Department of Revenue.

The city’s sales tax total includes $14.71 million from 887 businesses reporting in DuPage County and nearly $23,000 from 27 businesses reporting in Cook County.

Elmhurst ranked fourth among DuPage County municipalities in First Quarter sales tax receipts behind only Naperville ($27.28 million/1,716 businesses), Downers Grove ($15.59M/1,051) and Aurora ($14.83M/828).  Lombard ($14.43M/944) rounded out the county’s top five, ahead of Oak Brook ($12.82M/477).

Automobile dealerships and service stations accounted for 40 percent of Elmhurst’s Second Quarter sales tax receipts, ranking second countywide only to Naperville ($9.75M) at more than $5.81 million.  Rounding out the county’s top five were Westmont ($5.1M), Lisle ($4.93M) and Downers Grove ($4.76M).

At a rate of 6.25 cents per $1.00, the state’s share of Elmhurst sales tax receipts reached nearly $10.26 million.  The city’s total ranked fourth highest in DuPage County behind Naperville ($19.81M), Downers Grove ($11.11M) and Lombard ($10.36M).

DuPage County earned nearly $1.27 million from Elmhurst from a combination of the one-quarter percent of the state sales tax ($512,416.70), motor fuel sales tax of four cents per gallon ($243,208.20) and water commission sales tax of one-quarter percent ($512,447.26).

As a home rule community, Elmhurst received nearly $2.72 million from a combination of the municipal sales tax ($2.29M), state sales tax (1% of $10.26M) and municipal home rule sales tax ($319,340.76).

Elmhurst’s First Quarter 2003 figure was some $700,000 below the total of $15.437 million generated by 1,096 businesses during the holiday-assisted Fourth Quarter of 2002 (October 1 through December 31).
