Classic Cinemas Theaters have once again been recognized by West Suburban Living readers as the “Best of the West.” This year, three of the company’s theatres nabbed top billing, taking the first, second and third place honors as the readers’ top choice. Awarded the 2106 Best Theatre was the Tivoli in downtown Downers Grove, followed by its sister locations the Charlestowne 18 in St. Charles, and York Theatre in Elmhurst. When the residents of the suburban area gave the honor of “Best of the West” to the Tivoli Theatre for the 11th consistent year, this venue was placed in the West Suburban Living 20th Anniversary Hall of Fame.
The Tivoli Theatre was the first venue operated by Classic Cinemas (circa 1978). Originally opened in 1928 as was one of the first theatres in the country to play “the talkies,” the Tivoli remains an iconic area landmark. The Tivoli Theatre boosts 1,012-seats and offers a state-of-the-art movie experience with films presented in the latest 4k digital projection and sound as well as Digital 3-D capabilities. “We are thrilled to be a part of the “Best of The West” Hall of Fame,” says Tivoli General Manager Linda Smith. “And we’re extreme proud of the Hall of Fame induction!”
The Charlestowne 18 Theatre in St. Charles, IL, is the largest venue of the Classic Cinemas theatre group since 2001. All auditoriums offer Enhanced 4K Digital Projection and Datasat Sound Processors, with several featuring Digital 3D presentation.
Built in 1924, the York Theatre is the second oldest theatre in the Classic Cinemas chain. Known for its design by noted theatre architect Elmer Behrns, the historic theatre has undergone extensive renovation, and now offers nine auditoriums, one of which has a seven-rank Barton pipe organ originally from the Rialto Theatre in Champaign, IL. The theatre has received numerous awards, including a historical marker from the Elmhurst Historical Museum. In addition, Classic Cinemas marked the opening of its 100th screen at the York in 2011.
“Here at Classic Cinemas we strive to bring the best film experience to each of our guests,” says CEO Chris Johnson. “ Earning these awards is a reflection of our dedication to the local communities we serve with each of our theatres.”
The Tivoli Bowl was also acknowledged by readers of West Suburban Living as a favorite bowling alley in the suburban area.
