ELMHURST BUSINESSES GENERATE $16.24 MILLION
IN SALES TAXES DURING SECOND QUARTER
ELMHURST, Ill., October 9, 2002 – A total of 861 Elmhurst businesses combined to generate nearly $16.24 million in state, county and local sales tax receipts during the Second Quarter (April 1 to June 30), according to a Report of Sales Tax Receipts issued by the Illinois Department of Revenue.
Elmhurst ranked fourth among DuPage County municipalities in Second Quarter sales tax receipts behind only Naperville ($33.3 million/1,547 businesses), Downers Grove ($19.6M/1,014) and Lombard ($16.8M/944). Aurora ($16.1M/748) rounded out the county’s top five, ahead of Oak Brook ($15M/428).
Automobile dealerships and service stations accounted for more than one-third of Elmhurst’s Second Quarter sales tax receipts, ranking second countywide only to Naperville ($9.01M) at more than $5.73 million. Rounding out the county’s top five were Westmont ($5.43M), Downers Grove ($4.73M) and Lisle ($3.83M).
At a rate of 6.25 cents per $1.00, the state’s share of Elmhurst sales tax receipts exceeded $11.86 million. The city’s total ranked fourth highest in DuPage County behind Naperville ($23.6M), Downers Grove ($14.06M) and Lombard ($11.99M).
DuPage County earned nearly $1.43 million from Elmhurst from a combination of one-quarter percent of the state sales tax ($592,941.89), motor fuel sales tax of four cents per gallon ($238,990.30) and water commission sales tax of one-quarter percent ($592,828.85).
As a home rule community, Elmhurst received more than $2.95 million from a combination of the one-percent municipal share of the state sales tax ($11.86M) and municipal home rule sales tax ($330,639). The city’s total includes a high of nearly $1.15 million in sales tax receipts related to autos.
