Newsmakers
Elmhurst College (190 Prospect Avenue) has been awarded a $2 million grant—the largest private foundation grant in school history—from the Lilly Endowment’s  “Programs for the Theological Exploration of Vocation” to support a wide-ranging College program designed to help students reflect on how their career choices might relate to their faith traditions and commitments.

The Morton Arboretum (4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle) received a $1 million grant from the State of Illinois Public Museum Capital Grants Program to begin construction of a new 36,000-square-foot Visitor Center to be completed in spring 2004.

Joel Herter of Wolf & Company LLP (2100 Clearwater Drive, Oak Brook) and Tom and Shirley Myers of Thomas O. Myers Real Estate (385 North York Street) were presented Elmhurst College Founders Medals at the annual President’s Holiday Dinner held at River Forest Country Club (15W468 Grand Avenue) on December 8.  Since their inception in 1979, Founders Medals have been award to only 57 individuals.

“The Rosary Bride:  A Cloistered Death,” the debut novel authored by Luisa Buehler, a.k.a. Luisa Scala, Owner of Wide Scope Staffing Services (4415 West Harrison, Suite 202, Hillside), is being published by Echelon Press for release in January.

William C. “Bill” Gooch Jr., Chief Executive Officer of Community Bank of Elmhurst (330 West Butterfield Road) is featured in a full-page ad for Lincoln facing the inside back cover of the November/December 2002 issue of Chicago District Golfer.

“Battling Professional Burnout:  How to Regain Your Professional Vitality,” an article written by Anne Felt, Owner of HeartFelt Coaching (342 East St. Charles Road), was published in the November 18, 2002, issue of Advance for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.

Students at Kinder Castle Early Care and Education Center (212 West Lake Street) collected more than 300 pounds of food to feed local families in need through the Greater Chicago Food Drive and 89 shoe boxes filled with gifts for children in needy countries through Operation Christmas Child.

SBC Ameritech (115 West Wesley Avenue, Wheaton) has named Valerie Bruggeman, Director of External Affairs, to replace Jerome Mytych as its DuPage County representative, with Mytych transferring to Cook County.  “Valerie is a terrific person who will do a great job,” said Mytych, who has been a strong supporter of Elmhurst and the Chamber.

Reverse Raffle
Jim Hallberg of Wolf & Company won the $250.00 top prize in the Chamber’s 100-ticket Reverse Split Raffle drawn at the Annual Holiday Business After Hours hosted by AmeriSuites (410 West Lake Street) on December 12.  For the cost of a $10.00 ticket, eight people received $25.00 each (Nos. 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 70, 80 and 90), while $50.00 went to the person drawn 50th.

Special Events
A selection of antique and contemporary cameos from the Lizzadro Collection will be on display at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art (220 Cottage Hill) from January 10 through April 30.

“State of the City” Mayoral Address
Elmhurst Mayor Thomas D. Marcucci will deliver his annual “State of the City” Mayoral Address at the Chamber’s Membership Breakfast host by Community Bank of Elmhurst (330 West Butterfield Road) on Thursday, January 16, from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m.  Co-sponsored by the Elmhurst Economic Development Corporation (209 North York Street), the event will be videotaped by “Elmhurst Our Kind of Town” for rebroadcast in February on Channel 6 of AT&T Broadband (688 Industrial Drive).  Seating is limited to 150 and reservations are required.
