ELMHURST BUSINESSES GENERATE $16 MILLION
IN SALES TAXES DURING SECOND QUARTER OF 2004

ELMHURST, Ill., October 22, 2004 – A total of 948 Elmhurst businesses combined to generate some $16 million in state, county and local sales tax receipts during the Second Quarter of 2004 (April 1 through June 30), according to a Report of Sales Tax Receipts issued by the Illinois Department of Revenue, a drop of $1 million as reported in 2003’s second three months.

The city’s sales tax total includes $15.56 million from 868 businesses reporting in DuPage County and more than $41,000 from 61 businesses reporting in Cook County.

Elmhurst ranked sixth among DuPage County municipalities in Second Quarter sales tax receipts behind Naperville ($36.38 million/1,635 businesses), Downers Grove ($20.09M/
1,076), Oak Brook ($16.51M/450), Lombard ($15.97M/913) and Aurora ($15.87M/862).  Rounding out the top 10 behind Elmhurst were Bloomingdale ($12.69M/660), Westmont ($11.06M/539), Wheaton ($8.8M/810) and Lisle ($7.99M/455).

Automobile dealerships and service stations accounted for 43 percent of Elmhurst’s Second Quarter sales tax receipts, ranking third countywide behind Naperville ($12.68M) and Westmont ($7.11M) at nearly $6.68 million.  Rounding out the county’s top five were Downers Grove ($6.09M) and Lisle ($4.89M).

At a rate of 5% of the 6.25% statewide sales tax rate, the state’s share of Elmhurst’s DuPage County receipts reached nearly $10.9 million.  The city’s total ranked fifth highest in DuPage County behind Naperville ($25.56M), Downers Grove ($13.69M), Oak Brook ($12.02M) and Lombard ($11.44M).  Aurora ($10.43M) followed Elmhurst in sixth.

DuPage County earned more than $1.33 million from Elmhurst from a combination of the one-quarter percent of the state sales tax ($544,455.54), motor fuel sales tax of four cents per gallon ($244,007.90) and water commission sales tax of one-quarter percent ($544,573.27).

As a home rule community, Elmhurst received nearly $2.86 million from a combination of the municipal sales tax ($2.42M), state sales tax (1% of $10.9M) and municipal home rule sales tax ($329,195.03).
