ELMHURST BUSINESSES GENERATE $15.68 MILLION
IN SALES TAXES DURING FIRST QUARTER OF 2005

ELMHURST, Ill., October 24, 2005 – A total of 1,005 Elmhurst businesses combined to generate nearly $15.62 million in state, county and local sales tax receipts during the First Quarter of 2005 (January 1 through March 31), according to a Report of Sales Tax Receipts issued by the Illinois Department of Revenue.

The city’s sales tax total includes more than $15.59 million from 939 businesses reporting in DuPage County and $28,108 from 66 businesses reporting in Cook County.

Elmhurst ranked third among DuPage County municipalities in First Quarter sales tax receipts behind Naperville ($35.8 million/1,789 businesses) and Downers Grove ($22M/1,159).  Rounding out the top 10 were Aurora ($14.82M/847), Oak Brook ($14.63M/497), Lombard ($14.55M/946), Bloomingdale ($12.48M/717), Westmont ($11.55M/564), Addison ($9.7M/832) and Wheaton ($8.75M/838).

Automobile dealerships and service stations accounted for 43 percent of Elmhurst’s First Quarter sales tax receipts at nearly $4.78 million, ranking third countywide behind Naperville ($10.38M) and Westmont ($5.47M).  Rounding out the county’s top five were Downers Grove ($4.64M) and Lisle ($4.1M).

At a rate of 5% of the 6.25% statewide sales tax rate, the state’s share of Elmhurst’s DuPage County receipts reached nearly $11.1 million.  The city’s total ranked third highest in DuPage County behind Naperville ($25.64M) and Downers Grove ($13.61M).  Rounding out the top 10 were Oak Brook ($10.25M), Lombard ($10.37M), Aurora ($9.68M), Bloomingdale ($8.28M), Westmont ($8.27M), Addison ($6.16M) and Wheaton ($5.63M).

DuPage County earned nearly $775,000 from Elmhurst from a combination of the one-quarter percent of the state sales tax ($553,174.47) and motor fuel sales tax of four cents per gallon ($220,880.33), while the county water commission’s sales tax of one-quarter percent ($538,422.20) generated more than one-half million dollars.

Not counting the one percent home rule tax on food and beverage, Elmhurst received more than $2.8 million from a combination of the one percent municipal sales tax ($2.45M) and one-quarter percent municipal home rule sales tax ($343,690.04).
