“The Arabian Nights” is coming to Elmhurst this spring and GreenMan Theatre Troupe will hold auditions for Mary Zimmerman’s acclaimed retelling of the classic tales. The play transports the audience with a rich and lyric blend of poetry, movement, music, and storytelling. Auditions will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 232 S. York Street in Elmhurst on Sunday, January 17 at 1 p.m., Monday, January 18 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, January 19 at 7 p.m. Performances begin April 8 and run three weekends through April 24. Artistic Director David Soria, who directed last season’s productions of “Cash on Delivery” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” will direct the show.
“The Arabian Nights” is GreenMan’s final production in their twelfth season. Zimmerman’s play premiered in 1992 by Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company. The New York Times said that “The Arabian Nights” is “a celebration of the salutary powers of storytelling.” The New York Post called the play “funny, sexy…romantic, enchanted and enchanting.” There are roles for six women and ten men. The company of actors creates over 40 roles in the course of the production. Appointments for auditions are not required. There is no pay. Actors are not required to prepare a monologue for auditions, but will read scenes from the script. Scene improvisation will be a part of the actor’s audition. Actors should come to auditions dressed comfortably for movement. Volunteers are also needed to assist the production team in several areas.
