ELMHURST BUSINESSES GENERATE $16.11 MILLION
IN SALES TAXES DURING SECOND QUARTER OF 2005

ELMHURST, Ill., November 17, 2005 – A total of 944 Elmhurst businesses combined to generate nearly $16.11 million in state, county and local sales tax receipts during the Second Quarter of 2005 (April 1 through June 30), according to a Report of Sales Tax Receipts issued by the Illinois Department of Revenue.

The city’s sales tax total includes nearly $16.06 million from 885 businesses reporting in DuPage County and more than $49,000 from 59 businesses reporting in Cook County.

Elmhurst ranked fifth among DuPage County municipalities in First Quarter sales tax receipts behind Naperville ($39 million/1,642 businesses), Downers Grove ($21.6M/1,076), Oak Brook ($17M/492) and Lombard ($16.55M/920).  Rounding out the top 10 were Aurora ($14.75M/810), Bloomingdale ($13.26M/653), Westmont ($11.9M/534), Addison ($10.7M/799) and Wheaton ($9.2M/798).

Automobile dealerships and service stations accounted for 38 percent of Elmhurst’s First Quarter sales tax receipts at nearly $6.14 million, ranking fourth countywide behind Naperville ($14.72M), Westmont ($7.68M) and Downers Grove ($6.84M).  Rounding out the county’s top five was Lisle ($5.42M).

At a rate of 5% of the 6.25% statewide sales tax rate, the state’s share of Elmhurst’s DuPage County receipts reached nearly $11.25 million.  The city’s total ranked fifth highest in DuPage County behind Naperville ($27.52M), Downers Grove ($14.78M), Lombard ($11.85M) and Oak Brook ($11.93M).  Rounding out the top 10 were Aurora ($9.6M), Bloomingdale ($8.76M), Westmont ($8.53M), Addison ($6.83M) and Itasca ($6.08M).

DuPage County earned nearly $783,000 from Elmhurst from a combination of the one-quarter percent of the state sales tax ($561,815.74) and motor fuel sales tax of four cents per gallon ($221,169.31), while the county water commission’s sales tax of one-quarter percent ($559,506.18) generated more than one-half million dollars.

Not counting the one percent home rule tax on food and beverage, Elmhurst received more than $2.85 million from a combination of the one percent municipal sales tax ($2.49M) and one-quarter percent municipal home rule sales tax ($365,459.19).
